Hind Husseini

Ms. Hind Taher Al-Husseini was born in Jerusalem on the 25th of April in the year 1916, to two Muslim well known Jerusalemite parents. She was only two years old when her father died. Her mother struggled too much to educate her and her brothers. She had a great impact on Sit Hind’s life and was greatly reflected in her practical life later.

She finished her elementary school at the Islamic School for Girls adjacent to the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque in 1922. Then she joined the English Secondary School and graduated in 1937 to work after that in the field of Education as a teacher. In 1945 she quit teaching and joined the voluntary social work with the Women Social Cooperative Society in Jerusalem as its coordinator. The Society had 22 branches all over Palestine.

In the year 1948, following the Deir Yassin massacre, she started looking for and gathering the survivors of the massacre who were homeless and parentless children whom she found scared and terrified huddled near the Holy Sepulcher Church. With the help of Mr. Adnan Amin Al-Tamimi she was able to rent two rooms in the Hosor Market in the old city of Jerusalem to accommodate the 55 orphan children. At that time she had only 138 Palestinian pounds in her bag. Here rang her most famous words” I swore to God that I will live with them or die with them  as she imagined that if these children died then the whole population of Palestine would be totally eliminated and face extinction. “And how will our great nation be eliminated?? No and one thousand No.”

On April 25 1948, she decided to form a charitable organization to take care of orphan and needy Palestinian children, and called it Dar Al-Tifel Al-Arabi (The Home of the Arab Child).

Following this great work that she executed and her continuous and selfless efforts, the world community esteemed and appreciated her experience and started to invite her to attend conferences to relate her experience in social work and her organization “Dar Al-Tifel Al-Arabi”. She attended the following conferences:

* The third Arab Studies Seminar held in 1952 in Damascus as an observer. Also she attended the conference for the vocational experts in the Middle East that was held in Lebanon where she narrated and gave testimony of her experience in social work and her organization “Dar Al-Tifel Al-Arabi”.
* The Social Studies for the Arab World Seminar held in Amman in 1956.
* The seminar on the role of the Arab peasant woman and her participation and efforts to promote the peasant society and the development of the Arab Society in general in1959.

She also received many medals and honored by different institutes and organizations:

1964: Pope Paul IV commemorating his visit to Jerusalem.
1980: The Italian honorary medal Adelai Distori given to pioneer women in the world.
1985: The Jordanian Star medal for Education.
1989: The First Grade medal from the Federal Government of Germany.

She was an honorary member in many social and educational societies and organizations:
